The Sadowsky preamp circuit is powerful! The control knobs can only boost, so they should be set fully clockwise for a flat response. Start out with them that way and set to taste, but you will get noise if you max them out and don't also turn down the volume knob. That is completely normal and not a defect or cause for concern.
